Pompei – Ercolano – Naples Tour
Our English speaking driver will welcome you at the cruiser terminal in Naples at 8:00am. (suggested pick up time).
After you will drive to Pompei where you are going to meet your local english speaking guide for your private two hours approx. walking tour trough the ruins of this fascinating ancient city.
Through the remains and ruins of this ancient city, you can imagine the everyday life of the Roman Empire and imagine the panic felt by the people in those last few minutes before the city was so disastrously buried. The volcano buried the city under many feet of ash and it was lost for 1,600 years before its accidental rediscovery.
Enjoy a real journey in search of an ancient civilization destroyed by the terrible eruption of Vesuvius in 79 A.D. Pompeii is one of the most significant historic vestiges of the Roman civilization and it appears as an exceptional open book on the art, customs, and crafts, of the everyday life of the time.
Today, Pompeii is one of Italy’s leading tourist attractions and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
After Pompei you next stop will be Ercolano were you will have another two hours approx. walking tour.
The ruins of Herculaneum, lying roughly 8 Km south-east of Naples, are most famous for having been destroyed, along with Pompeii, in the eruption of Mount Vesuvius beginning on August 24, AD 79. The town was buried under 75 feet (23 m) of ash deposited by a pyroclastic flow. It is undoubtedly one of the most impressive archaelogical sites in Italy.
Ancient tradition connected Herculaneum with the name of the Greek hero Heracles ( Hercules), an indication that the city was of Greek origin.
The most famous of the luxurious villas at Herculaneum is the Villa of the Papyri now identified as the magnificent seafront retreat for Lucius Calpurnius Piso Caesoninus, Julius Caesar’s father-in-law.
Much smaller than Pompei – about 5,000 people lived in the city at the time of the eruption, it was certainly wealthier and more select. Unlike Pompeii, wooden structures and furniture have survived. Out of the 20 hectars, which was the originally extension of the ancient town, less than a third has been brought to light so far. Many of the artefacts now are housed in the National Archaeological Museum in Naples, others in the local Antiquarium. Herculaneum, once a seaside resort, is now surrounded by the modern city of Ercolano.
After Ercolano you will drive back to Naples where you can enjoj a leisurely meal in a local restaurant or a snack at a coffee shop
(if you want to be quick!).
After lunch, in Naples you can visit a unique ‘archaeological museum’, and the Capodimonte museum has a very rare collection of valuable china.
Then, do not forget to visit the Royal Palace, the Plebiscito square, San Martino Castle and the thousand of folkloristic little streets and halley entangled all around the center of the city.
Back to your ship by 5:00 – 5:30pm.
This tour is conduct by an english speaking driver & an authorized english speaking guide for the ruins of Pompeii & Ercolano.
